Pokrov: The First Frost

On October 14th the old Slavic calendar turns a page: the first frost is expected to cover the ground, the fields are done, and the house is sealed for winter. Pokrov is the day autumn admits what it is becoming.

Every calendar has a day when the year stops pretending. In the old Slavic one it is October 14th: Pokrov. The name means “cover” or “veil”, and it carries two meanings at once. In the church calendar it is the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, whose veil is held over people as a sign of shelter. In the village calendar it is simpler and colder: the day the first frost or first snow is expected to cover the ground.

Both meanings say the same thing. Something is being covered. The field, the house, the body. The open, generous part of the year is over, and it is time to protect what is left.

Autumn before lunch, winter after

An old saying puts it bluntly: “Pokrov: autumn before lunch, winter after.” By this day the harvest was in, cattle were brought into the barns for good, and the last field work was finished. Whatever was not done by Pokrov was not going to be done this year.

People watched the weather closely. Snow on Pokrov was a good sign, a promise of a proper winter and a good harvest to follow. A warm Pokrov meant a mild, uncertain winter. Where the wind blew from that day, it was believed, the cold would come from all season.

Sealing the house

Pokrov was the day to get the house ready. Window frames were caulked with moss and tow, the stove was checked, and the first real fire of the season was lit. There was even a small prayer for it, said half as a joke: “Father Pokrov, warm our hut without firewood.”

Housewives baked pancakes or pies that day “to bake the corners”, so the warmth of the oven would fill every corner of the house before the cold arrived. It is a lovely idea and, if you think about it, good engineering: heat the whole house once, thoroughly, and it holds.

The beginning of the wedding season

With the fields finished, there was finally time for weddings, and Pokrov opened the season. Young women would go to church early and ask, in a rhyme that survives in many versions, for the earth to be covered with snow and for themselves to be “covered” with a husband. The veil of the feast and the bridal veil were never far apart.

Father Pokrov, cover the earth with snow, and cover me, young one, with a groom.

How to mark Pokrov today

You do not need a village or a stove. You need one evening and a little attention.

  • Bake something to warm the corners. Pancakes, a pie, a tray of apples with honey. Let the oven run a little longer than it needs to.
  • Seal one draught. A window that whistles, a door gap, a blanket on the back of the sofa. It is the most practical ritual in the whole calendar.
  • Bring something in. The garden chair, the last herbs from the balcony, the summer clothes into a box. Make the inside of your home the centre again.
  • Look at the morning ground. If there is frost, notice it. If not, notice the light. Write one line about the weather. That is how the old calendar was made.
  • Cover yourself, too. Your skin is the first thing that meets the cold air and the first thing that meets the dry indoor heat. Pokrov is a good day to switch to your colder-weather routine.

Covering the skin

This is where the old idea becomes very modern. When the heating comes on and the air outside turns sharp, the skin loses water faster than it does in summer. Protection in October is not about a heavier cream for the sake of it. It is about replacing what the season takes: renewing the dull surface left by summer sun, then giving moisture back and keeping it in.

That is exactly why our autumn edit is built in three steps: a gentle lactic acid peel once or twice a week, a peptide serum on the other evenings, and a hyaluronic gel morning and night. It is the skincare version of sealing the window frames. Not dramatic, just done properly and on time.

Light the first fire, bake something, and cover what you want to keep. Winter starts after lunch.
